The name Blu-ray Disc is derived from the blue-violet laser used to read and write this type of disc. Because of its shorter wavelength (405 nm), substantially more data can be stored on a Blu-ray Disc than on the DVD format, which uses a red (650 nm) laser. A dual layer Blu-ray Disc can store 50 GB, almost six times the capacity of a dual layer DVD. 1
So when the 2005 documentary March of the Penguins became a surprise hit and ahem, broke the ice, more penguin movies became a possibility. Luckily, one was already in the works, and even more luckily, Happy Feet is the project of Aussie auteur George Miller (best known for Babe), who does not follow anyone's lead. It takes only a few seconds -- the time it takes one of the penguins to sing the first verse of Prince's "Kiss," while another sings "Heartbreak Hotel" -- for Miller's film to qualify as the weirdest movie of the year. 17
What's deadly in Happy Feet is not mo-cap but the photo-realistic appearance of the film as a whole, and the way that look reinforces its solemn tone. But the story is, to be charitable, jejune, barely conceivable as a dud funny-animal comic book from the '50s. To summarize: The penguins, their food supply depleted by humans' overfishing, communicate their plight to sympathetic people and win a reprieve by tap-dancing in unison. They learn that skill from Mumble, who has been despised by his fellows until then. The penguins have rejected his tapping because they prefer to beak-sync old pop songs; think of the birds as so many lame Las Vegas lounge acts. 13
This ability is frowned upon by the colony's elders, who don't tolerate deviance of any kind. As a result, Mumble is ostracized throughout his childhood, with only his mother and his friend Gloria to turn to for help. Mumble then grows to an adult, still half-covered in fluffy down. Through a series of mishaps - mainly getting chased by a hungry leopard seal - the penguin finds himself far from his home and within the carefree colony of adelie penguins - penguins small in stature, but fiercely loyal to those they call friends. He quickly befriends a small group of bachelors who form a club of sorts called the Amigos: the leader, Ramon, the brothers Raul and Nestor, and twin brothers Rinaldo and Lombardo. The Amigos quickly embrace Mumble's dance moves and assimilate him into their misfit group. 6
Nearline storage - Derived from where 'Nearline' is a contraction of Near-online. Nearline storage is a term used in computer science to describe an intermediate type of data storage. It is a compromise between online storage (constant, very rapid access to data) and offline storage (infrequent access for backup purposes or long-term storage). It is called so because the storage system knows on which volume (disc) the data is, and usually asks a robot to retrieve it from its physical location (discs are held in a library of slots) and put into a disc drive to access it and thus bring the data it contains online. This process is not instantaneous, but it only does require a few seconds, hence the initial description. New Blu-Ray disc libraries hold very large amounts of data (Up to 34TB) in one device. 20
Blockbuster to eschew HD-DVD in favor of Blu-ray. But are Blu-ray discs 'rotting'?Blu-ray PLAYER rental onlyI think they are only going to be renting Blu-ray players. 9
The death of HD DVD has taken away any excuses the BluRay camp may have used in the past for slow adoption. BluRay is the only physical HD format in the marketplace. 8
It takes him a while to get there. First, he must unleash Robin Williams, who gives wacky, at times uneasy voice to several characters, including that of a charming Adlie penguin named Ramon, who sounds more East Los Angeles than Anywhere Antarctica. Having been shunned by the other emperor penguins because he can?t sing, Mumble joins a flock of smaller, stubbier Adlie penguins who, when not collecting pebbles, do stand-up. Mr. Williams, who these days is better heard than seen, also pours on the molasses as an Rockhopper penguin called Lovelace, who sounds a lot like the singer Barry White, which means he?s one of the few so-called black voices in a world that sounds otherwise white as deep winter. 10
That's not to say Happy Feet is all doom and gloom. This is a joyous, celebratory movie. In telling the story of a young penguin named Mumbles, the film celebrates penguin life and fills itself to the brim with breathtaking sequences showing off the world from a birds' eye view. 14
