The Akita dog had its postwar beginnings in the United States with the offsprings of Kongo-go during Kongo's heyday. The first Akita dogs from the Kongo line that went to the United States were offsprings of Eisu-go (Kongo x Haname) from Maikuso, the kennel of Mr. Michael Shitata, a well known dog dealer and promoter at that time. These were dogs that were closely linebred with Kongo. Mr. Shitara's friend, Mr. J. C. Prim, (this spelling may not be correct) who was on the staff at the General Headquarters (GHQ) of the U. S. Forces of Occupation at that time, sent three more Akita dogs to the United States at that time. These two gentlemen were among the earlier sources of Akita dogs that were shipped to the United States. 13

Nature: Used as a guard dog and a police dog by the Japanese, Akita has a powerful built that were earlier used to hunt bears in Japan. Their strong hunting instincts and quiet demeanor, calmness and intelligence make them good watchdogs. They are not tolerant of other dogs around them and need to be trained early to be tolerant toward other pets in the household. They can be patient with children, if they do not encroach upon their personal space while they maintain suspicious distance with strangers. Confident and consistent training with variations works best with Akitas. 10

The second wave went over there with the exporting of red pintos and brindle pintos. In order to understand how this came about, one must first know what happened in Japan prior to this time. Goromaru-go, a pinto from the Ichinoseki line, began to gain in popularity around 1952. With the coming of Tsukasa, Senzan, and Torafusa, The Ichinoseki line began overtake in popularity over the Kongo line around 1955. Goromaru-go had facial features and coat colors that reminded one of the St. Bernard type bloodline that came from the "Shin Akita" ("New Akita"). The "Shin Akitas" came from outcrossings of the Akita fighting dog to other breeds. Later, Tamakumo-go, also of the Ichinoseki line, also began to gain in popularity. Soon Goromaru and Tamakumo became the two main bloodlines of the Ichinoseki line. 13

Akita dogs are said to be intelligent, but bossy. They need control, but also love as much as any other dog in the world. 22

Of all the Irish American breeds of dogs, the Irish Setter is probably the most popular. Irish setters were originally working dogs that used to "set” game. That is, they would crouch down close to a game (a bird, for instance) and wait until the hunter would throw a net over the dog and the game. Today, Irish setters, particularly the field types, are primarily gun dogs, bird dogs, and all in all reliable hunting companions. Their friendliness and genuine affection for humans make them great pets. Their excellent tempers and loyalty rival the best of the breeds of dogs. 17

Many may recall the Great Tokyo Chikukken (Tokyo Domestic Dog) scandal that shook not only the dog circles but also society as a whole. If the Kongo line was the first wave, pintos from the Goromaru line could be considered as Akita dogs of the second wave. 13

The Akita originated in Japan and is highly prized within their culture. You will find that Akita is a medium sized dog with the males gaining a height of 25 to 28 inches and the females 23 to 26 inches. They normally weigh between 65 to 130 pounds depending on sex and of course their care. Generally these dogs are white, pinto, or brindle in color. While they live in a moderate to hot climate in Japan you will find they have a double coat that is quite waterproof. The Akita has a harsh, straight topcoat, with an under coat that is dense and soft. This dog breed typically sheds their coat twice a year. 20

The Akita always makes a lasting first impression. Akitas are large, powerful dogs with substantial bone and musculature. The broad chest and neck of the Akita serve as a solid base for the Akita's large head, the Akita's most distinguishing feature. The broad skull and the short muzzle form a blunt triangle when viewed from above. The massive head in combination with the small triangular shaped eyes and small erect ears give the Akita dog an intimidating, yet dignified, expression. 15

Outside Japan, pinto is an acceptable Akita color, but not within it. More colors of the Akita are acceptable within the United States as dog breeders continue to interbreed the Japanese Akita with the United States Akita which is typically a bigger and heavier build version. 1

However, the United States being a large nation, the tendency is for breeders to carry on individual breeding programs in different parts of the country. Thus, people with Akita dogs of the first and second waves in the United States developed viewpoints that were much different from those in Japan. 13

Akita dogs are going to require a certain amount of grooming. They need to be brushed daily with a firm bristle. You will want to avoid bathing the dog as much as possible. They tend to have sensitive skin and it can become irritated when you bath them and use shampoo. You also don't want to strip the coat of its natural oils during the bathing process as that can cause damage. This dog breed has webbed feet and need to have the hair trimmed away from their paws to make them more comfortable. 20

A caution for the Akita dogs is their medical problems. They are prone to hip dysphasia, hypothyroid, eye problems, and lupus. You have to be very attentive with the Akita breed when dealing with health care. You will want to make sure they have regular trips to the veterinarian and that they are given proper nutrition. 20

The ancestors of the Akita were used for hunting by matagi, or a hunter from the Tohoko Region. During that time the Akita were typically called matagi inu (inu means dog in Japanese). These dogs possessed a smaller build than present day Akita dogs do. In addition, many of these ancestral Akita dogs were used for guarding and protecting people. Some were even used to hunt bears in particular. 1

In addition to being easy going, quiet life enhancing pets, the Akita breed is also known for being easy to house break and very clean dogs. The Akita is known for being so clean that many people have described the Akita breed as "cat like" for their odorless and cleanly appearance. When training Akita dogs to be house broken, many successfully accomplish this task within a few weeks, however, if you have other dog breeds that learn at a slower pace this can affect the Akita's learning pace slowing it down as well. 1

As previously stated, in the past, regional dogs were used to hunt bears and Japanese antelopes in the Kazuno area. These dogs were used in the Yasato section of Odate, as village guard dogs and hunting dogs (especially in the Ani area). A lord of the Odate Castle of a certain generations, who was devoted to dog fighting, used them as fighting dogs. Thus, fighting dogs became popular, and demand for these large powerful dogs increased during the 1890s. The crossbreeding of the Akita dog with Tosa fighting dog by some of the breeders soon spread to the Kazuno and Senboku areas. Mr. Shigeie Izumi, the mayor of Odate at that time, was against this trend of crossbreeding, and started a movement to preserve the Akita dog. 24

Since the Akita does have a possessive temperament as well as a prey instinct they do need to be socialized with other pets at an early age. Akitas raised with cats and other dogs will do very well as companion pets, but without socialization they may be aggressive and are not recommended for multi-pet families if they are older, non-socialized dogs. 1

A large dog that may intimidate friends and family because of the aloofness and the way they watch. If you are not used to it, it can be a little daunting at first. 7

Many records are available on the increased activities in the Odate area to restore the Akita dog to the Japanese dog since the Akita dog was declared as one of the natural monuments. Some of the pioneers who were involved in the restoration process were: Mr. Shigeie Izumi (Mayor of Odate at that time), who was a also a trustee of Nippo and chairman of Akiho ; Mr. Yaichiro Tayama ( see photograph in the preceding chapter ), who was the chairman of Aiken Kyokai (a fighting dog club); Mr. Susumi Ono , who was on the faculty of the Odate Junior High School; Mr. Kuniro Ichinoseki of Niida Village and Mr. Hyoemon Kyono of Yuzawa in Southern Akita ( see photograph ). 14
